What I’ve Learned By Being Consistent

Consistency. We’re all familiar with the word, but yet often we underestimate its power. Or at least I did. When it comes to healthy living, consistency is key. It is necessary in order to make gains and also to maintain what we’ve already built. I want to make one thing very clear here – consistency and perfection are not the same thing. As a recovering (or learning to manage) perfectionist, learning this lesson in life didn’t come easy for me. As I have grown in my health journey, and in turn as a person, I have realized that it’s about the journey, not the destination. I strive for progress, not perfection, and I encourage my clients to do the same.

When it comes to healthy habits, there are so many categories to consider. Some come more naturally for certain people than others, and some take more determination to make it happen. But every effort, no matter how small, we make to improve our health is worth it. Baby steps add up, so long as you keep taking them. Exercise requires consistency if we want to see improvements. Healthy eating also requires consistency. As does personal hygiene and self care. Taking my supplements and doing personal development consistently is also a very important part of being at my best. Daily meditation and a devotional help me clear my head and remain grounded. This isn’t to say that I don’t have a rest day from exercise, or have a less than ideal meal from time to time. I do. But what we do 95% of the time weighs much more heavily than what we do on that off 5%. When I let my consistency slip, it’s noticeable. When I slack on my healthy eating and exercise regimen, I feel it. When I put my personal hygiene, self care, or personal development on the back burner, it affects me negatively. If I am not making time to fill my cup with meditation and devotions, I feel less focused and attentive than I want to be. These are the things that keep me sustained physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. And in order to reap the best benefits, I must be consistent.

β€œIt’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.”
― Anthony Robbins

This is so true! It’s the little choices we make each day that have a compounding effect. Such an important reminder …. thank you!
